Detective Chad

Detective Chad started off as a light-hearted concept for a puzzle-themed video game - a detective who has muscles so strong that it poses a problem in his daily life.  Every few seconds or so, Detective Chad must flex his muscles to keep them in shape, or else he risks losing them, thus causing a game over. However, when he flexes his muscles, he also causes a shockwave that destroys objects around him! Tasked with this unique conundrum, the player must collect key evidence around crime scenes in each level, while also continuously flexing to ensure that Detective Chad stays in shape.

For this game, I worked on a lot of the conceptualizing stage. This includes the character designs for Detective Chad and his assistant, Detective Dee, as well as some of the environments and the user interfaces as well. There are icons to show remaining evidence that Detective Chad has collected, as well as broken icons when he accidentally breaks those. I also created the Flex Meter, which progressively decreases over time and is only replenished when Detective Chad flexes his muscles. If the meter runs out, it’s a game over for the player.

While the game was unfinished, it was still a very fun project that I helped to work on, and learned a lot about general designing for games and working in a team to process ideas and finalize them.
